Understanding Log Files
Log files are an essential tool for resolving problems with the software and hardware. You are strongly advised to activate all the necessary log files. Some log files are specific to the Liebert UPS Monitor software, and others are an integral part of the Windows operating system.

Liebert UPS Monitor Log Files

The various Event modules can also create log files of their actions and attempted actions. The default folder is under the Program Files folder, (usually on drive C), in the Common Files\PNX Shared\Events, and in the other subfolders. You are strongly recommended to check the box to create a log file.

Error Log File

This file is activated by default during installation. It cannot be turned off. It records details of any error which occurs while the software is operating. In many cases, the user will not know that an error has occurred. The file is called ERRORS.PEL, and is located in the folder c:\Program Files\Common Files\PNX Shared.

Event Log File

The UPS Data Collector can keep a log file (.LOG) of Event messages received from the UPS. A separate file is kept for each serial port which is configured with a UPS module or MSS. If the UPS system is configured as a Master / Slave system connected to a single serial port, then all event information is included in a single LOG file. To configure this feature, modify the following settings: Tools Menu|Data Collector Properties|Events.

Log events in folder Check this option if you wish to keep a log of all messages received from the UPS's being monitored. The files should be kept in the same folder as the UPS Monitor software to ensure they are accessible from the Client PC. This will be the default setting.

Keep events for this many days Set this value to the number of days (between 1 and 30) you want to keep the Events in the log file. Any Events collected which are older than the number of days given will be deleted.

Data Log File

The UPS Data Collector can keep a log file (.UPD) of Events and Data from the UPS for use by the Data History Viewer. A separate UPD file is kept for each serial port which is configured with a UPS module or MSS. If the UPS system is configured as a Master / Slave system connected to a single serial port, then all event information is included in a single UPD file. To configure this option, modify the following settings: Tools Menu|Data Collector Properties|Data.

Log data in folder Check this option if you wish to keep a log of the data and events received from the UPS. The files should be kept in the same folder as the UPS Monitor software to ensure they are accessible from the Client PC. This will be the default setting.

Keep data for this many days Set this value to the number of days (between 1 and 30) you want to keep the UPS data in the log file. Any data collected which is older than the number of days given will be deleted.

Log data based on a time interval Set this value to the interval between data log file entries. Smaller values should be used with caution as they may result in large data files.

Always log data that includes alarms or warnings Check this option if you want data logged whenever a new alarm or warning state is present on the UPS regardless of the interval you have set. It is recommended you always leave this option on for diagnostic purposes.

Only log data that includes alarms or warnings (Event History) Check this option if you want to log data only when a new alarm or warning state occurs on the UPS. This will, in effect, be an Event History log, which will include the data at the time of event occurrences.

Always log data that includes alarms or warnings Check this option if you want data logged whenever a new alarm or warning state is present on the UPS regardless of the interval you have set. It is recommended you always leave this option on for diagnostic purposes.

Advanced Options

This stores a log of the data packets coming from the UPS to the Server PC. It is saved in the Programs Folder. This file has the name of the UPS module which is being monitored. This file can become very large. Use it only when requested by a Liebert technical support person, and remember to disable it when finished.

Windows Log Files

Modem Log File

This file is activated as follows: Control Panel|Modems|"Modem Name"|Properties| Connection|Advanced.

Windows 95: Check the box "Record a log file".

Windows 98: Check the box "Append to log". If this box is not checked, Windows 98 will overwrite the existing file every time the modem is accessed, ie., only the last event is kept in the file.

The file will be located in the Windows folder. In Windows 95, it will be called MODEMLOG.TXT. In Windows 98, it will take the name of the installed modem, ie., the name will be something like 3COMSPORTSTER.LOG.

Dial Up Networking (DUN) Log File

This log file records a large number of useful details concerning your DUN connections. This log file is activated as follows:

Windows 95: Start Menu|Programs|Accessories|Dial Up Networking.

Windows 98: Start Menu|Programs|Accessories|Communications|Dial Up Networking.

Right click on the icon of your DUN connection. Then click Properties|Server Types. Ensure that the box "Record a log file for this connection", is checked.

The file is called PPPLOG.TXT, and will be located in the Windows folder.
